About Lake LaVerne

Lake Laverne history

"Lake LaVerne, the home of Lancelot and Elaine, was created with a $10,000 donation in 1916 by LaVerne W. Noyes.  Noyes, a wealthy Chicago philanthropist and member of the first graduating class of 1872, funded a lake in what had been a three-acre marsh area, fed by College Creek.  Another Iowa State tradition: If you walk around the Lake LaVerne three times with your beloved, you are destined to be together." Watersheds

College Creek (sub-watershed of Squaw Creek watershed)
Lake LaVerne is a highly visible lake in Ames located on the north side of Lincoln Way in Campustown and adjacent to College Creek. It is located in the College Creek watershed which includes 2370 acres of urban and rural agricultural fringe land area. College Creek is a tributary of Squaw Creek. Squaw Creek is a tributary to South Skunk River.

Lake LaVerne watershed
The watershed, or drainage area, of Lake LaVerne is actually quite small. Only 10.35 acres of land drain directly into the lake. This makes Lake LaVerne a prime location to test new water quality improvement methodologies, such as a VFI.

Lake LaVerne water quality

In August of 2014, Lake Laverne was indicating eutrophic characteristics: low water clarity, high chlorophyll a and total phosphorous concentrations, and noxious surface scums of algae.
